What's so special about GLD Solvent?
It is becoming increasingly common for yellowish (beige, yellow to ochre) colours on smooth leather to suffer from colour transfer. This generally affects automotive and furniture leather. The transfer is caused by various clothing items and materials, with jackets, trousers, or belts being the main culprits. The fabrics, textiles, or leather used transfer dyes onto the leather surface of the seat, which then form a chemical bond with the leather colour. The dyes penetrate the leather surface, and this colour transfer cannot be removed with standard commercially available cleaners.
Always clean the discoloured surface first with a "Strong Cleaner" (Reiniger sterk) and test if this cleaning is sufficient. If the discolouration cannot be removed this way, the surface must then be treated with GLD.
Apply GLD to a clean, white terry cloth and treat the surface carefully. GLD dissolves the protective coating; while removing the contamination, some leather colour may also be dissolved. Therefore, one must be careful not to completely remove the protective layer. If colour is dissolved, or if the contamination cannot be fully removed, the area must be touched up with "Leder Fresh". In case of severe darkening, dab the colour on multiple times, drying with a hairdryer in between applications.
After cleaning with GLD, the removed protective layer must be resealed. Apply "Leder Fresh" (either "neutral" or in a matching colour) using a sponge. "Leder Fresh" neutral renews the protective layer without discolouring the treated surface. To prevent future colour transfer, the surface must be post-treated with "Leder Protector" (Leder Verzegeling). This product reduces the penetration of dyes into the leather colour. Finally, care for the leather with "Leder Protector".
Note: GLD can alter the leather grain!
MANUAL
How do you use GLD Solvent?
Always test the product on an inconspicuous area first, as GLD can affect the leather's colour layer. Moisten a white, lint-free cloth with a small amount of GLD Solvent. Gently rub over the stain or the surface to be treated; the cloth will likely pick up some of the original colour, which is normal during this process. Work systematically and do not apply too much pressure to avoid removing the entire colour layer. If the discolouration is deep in the finish, the surface must be recoloured with Leder Fresh after cleaning with GLD. Always use a care product such as Leder Shield after the treatment to minimize future discolouration.
